When she welcomed her first child in August 2021 she shared a black-and-white photo and took a social media break to focus on family. Balfe used the announcement to highlight charities such as World Child Cancer, Choose Love, UNICEF and the UN Refugee Agency.

Balfe and Scottish music producer Tony McGill were married in August 2019 at St. Mary’s Church in Bruton, Somerset. She had revealed their engagement exclusively to PEOPLE in January 2018.
