Vance recounted growing up in Appalachia, raised mainly by his grandmother while his mother struggled with addiction. He said he joined the Marines after high school, earned a bachelor’s from Ohio State in 2009 and later attended Yale Law, where he and Usha were students.
He credited Usha with helping him adjust at Yale and with prompting him to confront unhealthy habits. The couple married in June 2014, have three children — Ewan (2017), Vivek (2020) and Mirabel Rose (Dec. 2021) — and are expecting a fourth child due in late July. Vance also discussed his 2019 conversion to Catholicism in his memoir "Communion."
