The series of illnesses began after a Dutch man died April 11 and his remains were removed April 24 at St. Helena; his wife later fell ill and died after disembarking. On April 27 a British passenger was evacuated to South Africa and remains in ICU; Oceanwide said a hantavirus variant was identified in that patient. A German national died on May 2. Two crew members, a British and a Dutch national, require urgent care. The CDC notes hantavirus can be transmitted via contact with infected rodents and causes flu-like symptoms and breathing difficulties.
