Simultaneously, Trump put massive pressure on NATO. The alliance would only be truly strong and capable of action if Greenland were "in the hands of the United States". Otherwise, China or Russia could gain influence on the island. Without the military strength of the USA, NATO is not an effective deterrent.

Clear Rejection from Denmark and Greenland

Greenland is an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark - both are members of NATO. Both the Danish and the Greenlandic government strongly reject Trump's takeover plans. Nevertheless, the US president himself did not expressly rule out the use of military means.

On Wednesday, Denmark's Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Greenland's Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt will meet with JD Vance and Marco Rubio at the White House. The aim is to diplomatically clarify the future of the island and to prevent further escalation.
